Step back to the land that time forgot and journey to Makrades where you will be lead through hidden olive groves, canopied by intertwining branches. Follow the ancient stone walled path to Angelokastro, meaning castle of angels, situated on the highest peak of Corfu’s shoreline. You will have the option here to climb the mountain and see the fortress for yourself, which is highly recommended. Alternatively you can take in the view and have a coffee at the small café at the foot of the hill. From here you will travel to the small village of Krini, this picture postcard village remains unspoiled and is full of Greek tradition.

MAKRADES TO ST. GEORGE WALK

Wander down narrow streets through the labyrinth of houses colourfully decorated with flowers. You will set off from here and begin to make your decent from the mountain. As you turn the corner, prepare to be amazed as the path opens into an awe inspiring view. Between two large rock formations you have bird’s eye views of St George, San Stefanos and Arillas. If you look to your left you have the Diapontia islands (consisting of Mathraki, Othoni and Ericusa) neatly displayed for your viewing pleasure. Follow the ancient stone wall that guides your path as it twists and turns to bring you to the foot of the mountain. This historic pathway was once used as a donkey trail, designed to help Greeks transport their olives and other materials through treacherous terrain. At the base of the mountain, maneuver your way through the wilderness of olive groves and forest paths until you arrive at your final destination of St George. Here you will be welcomed with open arms to Akrogiali, a unique sea front fish taverna where you can choose to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch or put your feet up and take in the calm atmosphere with a drink in hand. Minimum total group requirement of 4 adults per walk. Appropriate footwear must be worn, no summer sandals or flip flops.
